Uniemp develops technological innovation projects for the private and public sectors. Its range of action and main mission is to transfer knowledge generated at universities to the productive sectors. As a two-way street, projects are developed in partnerships, combining competencies to pave the way for innovations.

Below are some examples of projects developed by Uniemp.

In accordance with provisions on ethics, specifically confidentiality and secrecy clauses included in agreements signed by Uniemp, disclosed of the projects below has been authorized by Uniemp's partners.

  Genetically modified eucalyptus will guarantee better quality in paper production
eucalyptus/cellulose

In partnership with Cia. Suzano and Esalq -- Escola Superior de Agronomia Luiz de Queiroz -- at the University of São Paulo, Uniemp is developing a research on "Quality Modification of Eucalyptus Wood", to obtain better quality genetic material and reduce the industrial process costs of paper production. A reduction in environmental impact is another benefit of this research, since it is aimed at reducing the quantity of chemical compounds used in cellulose extraction processes.

As part of its agreement with Uniemp, Cia. Suzano offered grants to three post-doctoral researchers and a bioinformation technology engineer.

The team of researchers has already identified the gene to be introduced into eucalyptus to reduce lignin content. The project will be ready by 2005.

Furthermore, the research to improve the quality of eucalyptus can be applied in the future by countries that use other types of wood, such as pinus and populos, in paper production. In Brazil, eucalyptus is the most commonly used.

Uniemp integrates the Official Press systems
The project developed for the Official Press of the State of São Paulo (Imesp) is one of Uniemp's most important in the Information Technology area. Begun in 1999 and to be completed during 2003, the project is being developed to integrate the company's system through the implementation of Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) software.

The assignment uses UML diagrams, a modeling standard of object-oriented technology, one of the most modern in the area. Since this is a large project, which involves all areas of the company, its development was divided into several phases.

The process was started in the Human Resources Area of the Official Press in December 1999. The following year, the financial and accounting modules were implemented. Currently it is in the commercial and Production Planning and Control (PPC) phase.

For each phase of the project, Uniemp follows a procurement procedure to determine the software supplier that will be used. This process takes approximately two months and follows the model suggested by the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (SEI/CMU) in the United States.
A successful website
"São Paulo na Internet" [São Paulo on the Internet] (www.spnainternet.com.br) is the gateway to new investments in the state of São Paulo. Created to identify investment opportunities in the state's municipalities, Uniemp's partners in this project are Sebrae-SP, Economics Foundation at Universidade de Campinas [State University of Campinas (Unicamp)] and "Dinheiro Vivo" Agency.
website's home page

A survey of socioeconomic information and indices for the municipalities was carried out and the results were transformed into a data bank to offer support for municipal actions and serve as a source of data for investors. Accessing the website, the cybernaut can conduct research by specific location.

The socioeconomic indices and main industrial, commercial, service, agricultural, tourism and leisure activities of each municipality are made available.

In this portrait of the economy of the state of São Paulo, city halls can publish news about their administrations and the attractions of their cities, saving the potential investor from the need to consult many different public institutions to obtain information.
"Objeto Brasil" promotes Brazilian design

Uniemp has been Objeto Brasil's partner since it was founded in1996 and has sponsored a number of its projects. Created to promote Brazilian design and development of competence and innovation through new technologies, the purpose of Objeto Brasil is to bring closely together with design, the productive sector of universities. Its most recent work is the publication of the book "A Look at Brazilian Design," a portrait of the current design activities in Brazil.

The "Brasile: 500 anni in 11 giorni" exhibition, held in Milan (Italy) during September 2001, was organized by Objeto Brasil with the institutional support of Uniemp.

The event was divided into several modules:
   Cultural Itinerary -- with the exhibits "Football -- Pelé's Life," "Discovery of Brazil," "Italian Immigration to Brazil" and "Formula 1 Champions";
   Musical Itinerary -- with performances by musical groups of several types of rhythms;
   Tourism Itinerary -- with information on Brazilian tourist attractions;
   Commercial Creativity Itinerary -- with handcrafted products from several Brazilian regions;
   Gastronomic Itinerary -- with typical Brazilian dishes.

Always aiming at enhancing Brazilian product design and stimulating professionals in the area to promote Brazilian brands, Objeto Brasil organizes exhibitions, shows and presentations, acting as a bridge between basic research and innovation.
